Don't pretend to be an expert on GPS, but use one regularly with sailing. You can pick up a small portable GPS, and the sailing community and I like Garmin, for a couple to $300. For another $50 or so you buy a CD for Europe which has a lot of detail. You can use your computer to download the map into the GPS, all of the connections/hardware come with the GPS. After downloading the map, you don't need the computer until downloading another map. Garmin seems to be a bit more reliable, accurate, and easier to use for those I know.

Sky is the limit on purchasing a GPS. I like the small hand-held. It can give you accuracy to 15ft, just like the big boys, and is easy and light to pack. Runs on a couple of AA batteries, and if you use NIMH rechargables, you're good for 8hrs or so.

Lots of the sporting good retailers are putting these units on sale now, and you can pick up a Garmin Legend for ~$300 with software. We have Dick's, Gander Mtn around here, but I would think you could get the same deal at your local sports retailer, or online.

By the way, GPS works by triangulating signals from 3-10 satellites. The timing is so accurate that it can pinpoint your location withing a few yards if your satellite signals are good. All these satellites are courtesy of the defense dept, so if there is a war, count on your signal being scrambled, and accuracy in miles not yards.

I hope this makes some sense, not sure exactly what your questions are.
