You just can't beat a good GPS nav unit for finding your way around small city streets in Europe. Using a regular map for that is NOT fun. Even if you have a co-driver who is good at reading maps, a proper GPS nav will practically always be better. The routes it makes, take into consideration the road speeds and some even how much traffic there is. It'll guide you to your destination without you having to pull over constantly or missing turns etc.

Even though I live in Copenhagen and know the major streets, I often use a PDA with TomTom 6 and a bluetooth GPS receiver (SIRF III chipset) for when I need to go places in the city I'm not familiar with. I have no problems with reading maps, but it's just so much less of a hassle with GPS navigation.

It's essential that the GPS nav system you use is good though. There are lots of horrible systems out there. Both self-contained units and software. I can recommend the newer TomTom Go units and Tomtom 5-6 for PDA. The GPS receiver should have the SIRF III chipset, as it's a lot better than the previous models. Both when it comes to reception in high foliage and how fast it achieves location lock after turning on.
