Noel,
Thanx for taking time to read and reply. I don't think our comments are all that different if you think about it. While I may not have a "plan," nor likelihood of securing capital the likes of which we know it would take, the "idea" I've put forward is to rally enough SAAB-heads (as you say) to fund the campaign to find the suitor(s). Ambitious? Absolutely. Far-fetched? Yeah, that too. Dismiss it? Think twice about that one.
Your profile indicates you're a communications person...this is a marketing strategy, with a goal of attracting attention and real interest in the SAAB brand and the impending plight of this company, if the present course continues. Re-read your last sentence...I did several times. You're thinking about how it could be done. I'm looking to fund those thoughts.
One thing, GM has allowed marketing $$ to be spent. "Born From Jets" has raised brand recognition quite a bit. But they kept selling Oldsmobiles well after they announced the brand was going away, even telling customers so in the ads.
To my overall point, at least one "knowledgable" person shared with me that SAAB USA has already pondered "divorce" on their own. Another told me they shuttered their Atlanta offices and are now in Motown. So, who knows? Anyway, thanx again. When the time comes, I hope you'll offer your support.
