I parked right beside the pool at the Capitol with my girlfriend and spent an entire day walking the mall, going through the Smithsonian, looking at the new WWII memorial, down to the Roosevelt and the Jefferson, back through the holocaust museum, then back across the mall to the white house and some of the Smithsonian museums (I thought the American history one was the best!). If you're in Georgetown you won't be able to miss the amazing shopping all around and just the atmosphere of the place (I don't know how lively it will be in winter though...).
Too bad it's on short notice or you could contact your congressperson for a tour of the capitol...
Also, You'll most likely see more Saab's than you've ever seen in you life. Driving through Georgetown down to the Potomac we saw at least 20 saabs, including a Viggen and a 9000 Aero like mine.
Can't wait to go back in the spring, you can cover most of the exciting stuff right down in the Mall area.
Enjoy your trip!
