DC is a great place to visit and it should be quiet until New Year's eve. Just get out of the city before the New Year's insanity begins.
The Air and Space museum, Natural History museum, Spy museum (although I am now worried, as all of this tech is about 20yrs old, imagine what Lincon labs is currently making), and the holocaust museum (depressing and inspiring). The travel channel has a good guide, here's the link:

If you are looking for a place to eat, after you hit all the places in Georgetown of course, I would look up Generous George's. Strange but fun restaurant, you get a ton of food and the place is decorated with antiques and oddities.
Hope this helps and enjoy your trip. Remember to bundle up, DC is way colder than CA right now ;)
