My wife's on a long-term assignment outside NYC, and she just can't for the life of her figure out the area. Unfortunately, as soon as she pulls out of the garage she's lost. Before you make the big GPS purchase, you might try the following.

Verizon offers a directions service over their cellphones for a monthly charge. Seems to operate just like a GPS. You might try this for a while and see what she thinks; check out the latest issue of Consumer Reports, they have a story about this. Wife is going to pop for this.

There's also Mapquest and Google for directions that you print out before you get in the car; wifey does this most of the time and it seems to work quite well.

I have a very good sense of direction so GPS doesn't interest me, except on the guy-geek-gadget level. I've been in towncars that used them and they seem to work, I just don't trust them.
