I'm looking to buy a used lawn tractor this winter in preparation for next spring. I'd LIKE a John Deere, but I'd like to keep it between $600 and $800. I'd like something between "38" and 42", 12 to 18bhp, capable of mulching and potentially bagging. I'd also use it for yardwork (aerating, hauling leaves, etc, probably not dozing or blowing snow).
Unfortunately, used JD's in this range start at over $1000. I don't have that much yard to do. I'd prefer a tractor over a self propelled mower to speed things up
I've looked at a few online but have questions about reliability of some makes. I'm looking for feedback from Saabnet posters about their lawn tractors. Also feedback on engines would be great - Tecumsseh (sp?), B&S, Kohler (sp?), etc.
Options - Murray/Stanley (now out of business), Troy Bilt, Toro, Yard Machines, Lowes(???), Craftsman.
Also, if there are websites where these are reviewed or rated, that would be helpful.
And no, it doesn't have to be automatic/hydrostatic! LOL
Thanks much, and happy holidays.
