Many brands are now all made by MTD.... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Thu, 21 Dec 2006 07:08:36 In Reply to: OT: lawn tractors, JMJ in NC, Thu, 21 Dec 2006 05:48:33 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I can remember when MTD was the discount store brand, but they have survived and bought many of the High End brands when they all went belly up. MTD now manufacuters; Cub Cadet, Troy-Bilt, Bolens, White, Yardman, and Yard Machines (possibly their original brand). Of these, the Cub Cadet is their premium model.
My Dad owned Simplicity lawn tractors many years ago when they were made by J.I. Case and had decades of use from these (other than failure of the B&S short-blocks on seemingly automatic 5 year intervals).
When buying used, be aware of the original seller of the tractor. I have heard from many reputable sources that the John Deere equipment sold by Lowe's, Home Depot, etc., is almost always far inferior to that sold by dedicated Deere retailers. But occasionally these Big Box stores will carry the identical item too. My brother-in-law bought a new Deere lawn tractor from H-D when they were closing out that model for hundreds less than the Deere Retailers were charging.
I grew up near Tecumseh, MI (home of Tecumseh Products, maker of Tecumseh engines). The Tecumseh two-strokes (snow blower engines) have a very good reputation, but most of the non-employee locals would always opt for a Briggs engine when I was a kid.
