Europe is beautyful! Each country has its own charm, oh man soooo many places to see!
On your way to Italy you can make a quick stop in Switzerland and cross the Swiss Alps off your list. The city of Montreux (dubbed the Swiss riviera) lays on the other side of the lake from Geneva which is a major transport hub for air/rail. You can take a train to one of the picturesque swiss villages high in the alps. Those closest being Verbier in the sun drenched four valleys region (Valais canton) great village, great skiing! (cities en route: Geneva-Montreux-Evian-St.Martin-Verbier...I think that's the train route. A little further is the famous, yet secluded and serene, village of Zermatt. (cities en route: Geneva-Montreux-Brig-Zematt) The entire village is car free, pedestrial traffic only, and electric taxi/carts...you can take the tram to Klein-Matterhorn (Matterhorn Jr.) and observe the world from above. 3-4 hour ride from Geneva....stay in Zermatt, have dinner, see the horizon actually curve walk by moonlight through the village at night...an unforgettable experience!....four-six hours later you're back in Geneva....including the train out of town...
Northern italy is also very nice....and also not too far from Geneva...in the village of St.Martin on your way to Verbier you'll see signs for the St.Bernard mountain pass/tunnel which will put you in Italy..all a days drive....
doooo-it!!! :-)
