My current computers as a 12" Powerbook G4 and a Thinkpad T60.
The two computers are so different it's tough to compare. Being different sizes I can't really compare weight. Likewise, the PB has notably better battery life, but this could also be a difference between sizes.
I've been a Mac fan for years and have owned numerous machines. I still have an old Powerbook Duo from the early '90s and am amazed at how modern it still looks. My G4 has by far the best keyboard of any laptop I've used. Where as most laptop keyboards feel "mushy" to me, the G4 feels solid as a rock, which could be enough to make the switch if you're a big typer. I also really liked that I could get the DVD burner in the compact size, though I assume this is more common now. The built in speakers are surprising good, which can be nice for presentations or listening to some tunes in the hotel room. While my model doesn't have it, I bet the fiber optically lit keyboard would be nice, though the thinkpad has its light above the screen as well. My PB doesn’t have a PC card slot but does have firewire. The think is also just a gorgeous machine and a please to use. I’ve had no problems with the computer at all. Mac’s have traditionally been very well built, but I think this might be slipping in some of the new desktops.
The Thinkpad is a pretty ugly beast in my opinion, but the most durable of mainstream PC laptops from what I’ve seen, which is obviously a huge consideration. Everyone seems to get a kick out of the biometric fingerprint reader and I find the exterior WiFi switch handy. It’s work issue, but if I had to buy a mid-price PC laptop on my dollar I would probably stick with a thinkpad. Both computers have plenty of power, storage, etc. for me.
In terms of the OS, I guess that’s a more personal issue. I like OS X and it gives me very few problems and makes my life easier. For work, I mostly use MS Office or web based software so I don’t have propriety software issues to worry about. OS X seems to be much easier to integrate into the PC world than OS9, and indeed some of the “creatives” in my office use Macs on the network exclusively without problems. I don’t mind using a PC for work, and since it’s work issued it saves wear and tear on my computer, but with the ability to run dual OSs, I can’t imagine a reason that it would ever be strictly necessary.
Any other questions?
Craig
