I JUST got a SONY vaio this past weekend. I paid $1200 for 2 GB, 160 GB Harddrive, Intel Core duo (T5700). I am pretty happy with it. My cousin for christmas 2006 got the Toshiba and my brother got the gateway with the same specs. So far, the Toshiba faired pretty poorly compared to the three. I know of some others that didn't like their Toshiba as well. Their layout on the keyboard is kind of odd too. I don't know if you noticed the delete button on the Toshiba is on the side instead of the upper right corner like normal computers. For people who type a lot will definitely notice the mild annoyance.
I think the SONy was an excellent deal and got some great reviews online.
So my vote is the SONY. Have fun shopping.
