I think it's formica. HD sells these 4x8 sheets of laminate in a good assortment of patterns. It's meant for countertops but I did our shower in a simulated green marble and it held up real well for several years. Had to take it down only because someone thought a 2x3 doublehung in a tub/shower was a swell idea...it wasn't.
You get yourself a can of contact cement, roll it on both surfaces and lay it up.
But jp's advice it well taken. When we had our accessory apartment inspected the guy was emphatic about some exposed studs near the furnace needing to be covered with sheetrock for fire protection.
