...Horse bones are so hard that they are brittle. That means it is hard to break them, but when they break the explode into many pieces as they dissipate energy. Horses therefore need stem to stern surgeries that place screws into each piece. Bone healing is a race between the plates and screws breaking and the bones forming new calcium. Horses are so heavy that they cannot survive on just 3 legs. Abdominal slings over long periods of time cause colick in horses. The surgery is so large and devascularizes so much material that infection is likely. Many antibiotics cannot be used on live stock as antibiotics kill the bacteria that turn grass into sugar.
What does all this mean? Horses cannot have bones rodded like us humans. Parts of legs cannot be removed and replaced with prostheses. Horses therefore need to try to walk on surgerized legs, and that stresses the surgery and the other legs. That leads to a high rate of failure at the surgery sites or at the hooves.
It is such a shame that these magnificent animals cannot be saved as routinely as us humans, or even dogs for that matter.
It is also unfortunate that the laws regarding thoroughbreds state that mares cannot be artificially inseminated. That means Barbaro's legacy is lost.
