If an animal is only surviving in a zoo, and there is no hope that its natural environment would become suitable for re-establishment, is it truly "surviving"?
Why not store some of the DNA in hopes that someday we'll be able to clone the species after restoring the habitat? Both tasks sound somewhat fanciful.
On the other hand, some zoos do help with the homeless pet problem (link below)
