I'm not so sure...
Lower pressure WILL increase the size of the contact patch.
I don't understand how a larger contact patch will improve things.
If friction coefficient is constant (it really isn't...) then the size of the contact patch drops out of the equation.
Larger contact patch & same weight => lower contact pressure
Lower contact pressure & larger contact patch => same traction force...
Something about the deformability of the tread as it rolls under higher or lower pressure?? I bet you can't always count on the friction coefficient changing in the right direction. Several 'safety' instructions dispute that idea of lowering tire pressure for snow traction.
