Right. You can't always count on it. I found that a lower pressure increases traction in the ice or a slightly snowy road but as soon as the snow gets over an inch or two, it goes in the opposite direction. Higher pressure in the tire lets the tire bite down through the snow and gets better traction in the deep stuff.
Because of this, I've been keeping my tires AT the recommended pressures so it can handle either but if there IS a big snowstorm I will raise it or if there is an ice storm, I will lower.
