The small cylinder sounds like an automatic air vent (google "automatic air vent hvac" --without the quotes). All of your radiators should have one of these--in a perfect world.

Does the boiler have an automatic fill valve? How's the pressure? Low pressure makes bleeding difficult.

There should be a high point bleed somewhere--the lines that go over and up to the radiator don't continue upstairs, do they? If they do, go find the bleeds up there.

There might be shut off valves somewhere along the line to the radiator--so you can shut off the supply side to it, and force the return side line to vent.

It's sometimes easier to bleed with the circulation pumps off--depending on the system.
