Here in DC, I have a dentist that has state-of-the-art technology that I feel I'm paying for with each visit -- some of this I don't mind. Other than cleaning, I am told that the metal fillings from my childhood need to be replaced, and it's nearly $1400 per tooth to do so with some sort of composite. I've heard back and forth the wisdom of doing this. Certain fillings have been compromised and I've had those replaced. But I don't believe that fillings that are fine now, yet more than 25 years old, need to be replaced. Same sort of philosophy as with autos...why tinker with something that's functioning well? I also get a heavy upsell each time I go...you could do bonding here and there, some protective caps for the gum line on more than 12 teeth, etc. I could have $15,000 worth of work if I acted on every piece of advice! I do have insurance but it covers a fraction of the charges of this particular dentist.
What is one to believe? Plus, if anyone might have a suggestion of a good dentist in the DC area, please do recommend. Dental care is important -- I have a good set of teeth that I care for -- but I don't want to be taken for a ride.
Thanks in advance.
