Well????
I'm right there with you with pretty much having had my teeth drilled to hell and back in my early teens and now the fillings are slowly cracking and my dentist is telling me that we need to cap at least 3 of the molars (did 2 already 5 years ago).
This is a very good and fairly expensive dentist.
The risk of waiting too long is if the tooth split right down to the bone, it is too late to cap it and it will be more expensive.
As a comparison, about 8 years ago, I went to another dentist and had two rootcanals and crowns put on for about $1000.00 a pop and had problems with one of them from get go and the old dentist said he had to in through the side of the gum to treat the infection. He wasn't sure of the cause.
I didn't go for it and then years later I found this new dentist and he informed me that the crowns were poorly made and had to be redone together with a new root canal treatment.
The new good dentist don't even deal with molar rootcanals due to the difficult nature but sent me to a specialist where it was discovered that the old dentist had missed one root out of four (that's where the infection was) and had broken off a drill in the other tooth and left it there.
So two new root treatments and two new crowns cost me about $2000.00 out of pocket and that was with an insurance at the time kicking in which I didn't have when I went to the old dentist.
This new dentist also more or less refuse to pull out teeth but try to save them ahead of time before it is too late.
So it is a difference between dentist just as it is between car mechanics.
As you say, some of the old fillings have cracked and those should be treated so that stuff doesn't leak down and into the tooth and decay it further.
Another reason for a dentist to just replace old filling with new color coded ones are that people of today are more aware of their looks and don't want silver fillings to show.
But also as you say, we all want and need to make money and just as I tell a customer what his car needs, doesn't mean he go for everything I tell him, especially if it is an older Saab.
I can only prioritize the repairs and hope he follows my advice.
