Interesting history on premium dog foods.... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Sat, 24 Mar 2007 08:26:50 In Reply to: Dogfood recommendations, TN, Fri, 23 Mar 2007 17:41:17 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
When we got our Cocker puppy in 1984 we started him on Iam's. It was recommended to us by our Vet as equivalent to Hill's Science Diet at half to 2/3's the cost, and, like Science Diet, could only be purchased at a Vet's Office. As our dog aged he went from Growth (green bag), to Adult (blue bag), and finally to a prescription kibble food as his heart valve problems worsened.
The literature on Iam's at that time, stated that it was made by Monks at a monastary in Ohio (No, I haven't opened the bourbon yet today) and that Eukenuba was recommended only for mother dogs who were nursing, or for active hunting dogs during hunting season only. Since that time Iam's has been bought by one of the major human food companies, Eukanuba has become it's own brand, and many premium dog foods are now sold in grocery stores displacing the old standards of Purina Dog Chow, Ken-L-Ration, etc.
My son's dog , a nearly three-year old Shiba-Inu, was raised by his breeder on "Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lover's Soul" and then graduated to "Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul", both in kibble style. After being treated many times by his Vet for a minor, yet persistant, skin rash on his muzzle, my son was told to try a different food. Our Grand-puppy is now fed Nutro Brand "Lamb and Rice Formula" kibbble and the rash is ancient history.
As a former dog owner and not a Vet, my advice is to use a premium food merely because the dog's stools will be far easier to clean up. Obviously there are differences between the brands but I can't say that one is any better than the others. Your Vet and competent breeders should be good sources of information regarding what is best for your dog.
