I have a dog... she is 17yrs and 5 months. Since she was 12 she has been on a "better" diet. She was raised on standard good dog food with lots of cookies. She also had dry skin and would lick herself raw once a year at the end of summer. FLeas seemed to make it worse, but even flea free she has the issues.

At 12 she got into a Caramello Bar, you know, one of those large Cadbury bars. She ate the whole thing and it put her into toxic shock. Luckily it was identified and she came out of it. She was on a Boiled Rice/Bolied Chicken (60/40) for a couple of months and then converted to Science Diet Sensitive Stomach. SHe has also had a Bile issue for years before and after the Caramello incident, where she would throw up yellowish fluid, extra bile... there didn;t seem to be a pattern, but anything greasey would set it off... about a year ago I started feeding her the rice chicken diet again. She had an ear infection that I thought was a stroke, and she was on antibiotics for a while.

I buy chicken breasts on sale at .99 to 1.99 a pound, and source 25 pound bags of Basmati rice through a Co-op. She gets veggies tossed in every other batch or so as well. I feed her one cup in the morning and one cup in the evening. The cost runs about .50 to 1.00 per day and compares favorably with the cost of high end dog food.

The benefits alone from this diet would be worth twice the cost of any commercial dog food. SHe hasn't puked bile but twice in the last year. She hasn't had any skin issues. Her coat has never ever been more healthy. Her bowel movements are regular and of good consistancy (I know, ick).

At 17 she is affected by some congestuve heart issues, but gets car rides and barks like a fool out the window... I figure this is keeping her alive by clearing the lungs and also the excitement and motivation of car rides keeps her healthy in other ways.

So other than her cataracts and being 90% deaf and having some arthritis and sleeping 16 hours a day, she has never been healthier.

Feed her home made dog food and spend no more, have a healthier dog and feel great about it!
