but the whole kitten kaboodle. Besides you really don't want to drive that fast and miss the scenery.
Do stop at the various scenic look out. If you are driving up from Irvine, you kind of on the wrong side, i.e. the land side while the on coming traffic is on the ocean side. However, I like driving from the south up as I think you have a better and broader view of the coastline.
If you are into nature, just stop at various beach points, and there are plenty of them. The tricky part is to find the access roads to them. Some are easier to find than others, just do a couple. If you miss one there is always another somewhere ahead. You always have the option to hike down to it but watch out for private properties.
There is always the usual attractions (popular or otherwise) around Monterey Bay. I don't think you will like 17-Mile Drive, I sure didn't when I lived there. You can't see much of the coast other than houses, mansions and various golf courses. I highly recommend going through Monterey via Pacific Grove and just drive along the coast and it's absolutely free! If you are blessed with a nice clear day, try to get a coastal spot and watch the sunset.
If you are into art galleries and sampling cuisines, then at least drive through Carmel. Yes, it looks like a tourist town but it has it's charms.
Driving up from Monterey to San Francisco is slightly different, you will pass through more populated areas, such as Santa Cruz and a number of coastal communities. I also like seeing San Francisco from Hwy 1, the city is spectacular from that direction with the various landmarks and bridges in view.
If you have time, go further north via Golden Gate Bridge. You can decide whether to go to Sausalito (somewhat like Carmel) or to nature Muir Woods.
Pick a handful of places and some alternatives (such as weather dependent destinations), you really can't do everything in 2.5 days.
Have a great trip !
