OK...how about just getting out of town? I have done that drive many times and enjoy the northbound drive more than s-bound. Leaving Irvine I would definitely take the 405 to the 101 West. Once you get to the coast, that is where (IMHO) the "drive" begins.

Sure, there is a jog around Vandenberg AFB after Santa Barbara but prior to that the coast just south of SB is great. Particularly if you get a Santa Ana Wind day with unlimiited visibility.

I would also suggest that you get an XM or Sirius Radio for the drive. If not, or in addition to, bring your favorite tunes.

Breakfast in the sleepy town of Morro Bay is a great way to start your day if you happen to spend the night in or SLO or Cayucos.

If you have a few minutes, "fly" the route via Google Earth.
