I am traveling with an engineering supplier/consultant who works for a national firm. The topic of US regions which are very slow right now versus those that are booming came up in our converstions yesterday.
They (his company) are moving people out of the Great Lakes basin due to lack of work. The hottest areas for them are Las Vegas, Phoenix, and almost anywhere in the South West. He said North Carolina is continuing to grow (both Raleigh in the East and Asheville in the West), and that their Northern Alabama office is very busy too although he wasn't sure what was driving that growth.
Florida continues to be a steady base of business but they are seeing evidence of people moving out of FL, (NC seems to be a popular destination), due to hurricanes, high insurance costs driven by the hurricanes, and congestion.
You may want to consider one change at a time, location or profession. If you like NY, then change professions to a find better job. If you like engineering, then try various locations until you find your dream spot.
Bettter to do this now than 30 years in the future.
