You might want to remind your elected officials (and anyone else you can think of) that fully 35% of the Nation's _refined_ oil and gas products pass through Southeast Louisiana... you know, Hurricane Katrina's bull's eye. Many refineries and other oil & gas industry businesses are still suffering from the everlasting effects of Katrina and Hurricane Rita: a one-two punch consisting of damaged infrastructure and a lack of qualified or skilled employees (Metro New Orleans' population is down at least 20% and in some areas as much as 50%). As a result, many refineries that used to run 24/7 are running a substantially reduced schedule.
The Nation can get as much crude oil supply as it wants - not needs but wants; the biggest bottleneck and source of "exorbitant" gas prices is lack of refining capacity. The last major refinery built in the continental U.S. came online in the 70's. It's the classic NiMBY effect and now we all are "paying the price."
Cheers!
