both Adam B and jp, at least to some extent. Some of it depends on who owns the SUV.
We live in an affluent town where every third vehicle is a SUV and some families have two of them. The next third are optioned-up minivans. I hear people complain about gas prices, but they still stick with their big trucks. Maybe they can't get out of their leases or are upside down on the loans, but they still drive them. And it seems as if the number of these beasts has increased since last year when gas cracked $3. Go figure.
But whether they can afford them or not, I think people need to take a step back and ask themselves what they really need. I just get increasingly testy and cynical about this as it does (as one of you mentions) hurt the economy overall, not to mention the environment. Check the prices of food and other items--it's all trucked to your favorite store and that adds to the price. Gas prices are a big part of the coming postal rate increase, too.
But maybe gas prices at $4 will finally get people to realize that the free ride is over and America needs to rethink this stuff. About time.
