My brother-in-law who sells Chevys says that $3/gallon gas was the defining point in whether his Dealership would sell more SUV's and Trucks, or more cars. In light of recent fuel price increases that value may drift higher.
What baffles me is the speeds being driven by these low MPG vehicles. Admittedly Michigan does not enforce speed limits, but 90+MPHin a 6,000 pound SUV must yield single digit fuel efficiency numbers.
In January I paid $1.85/gallon here in Michigan for mid-grade, now it is $2.95/gallon and crude prices have been falling or held pretty much steady. It seems fuel prices are driven only by oligapolistic greed and not the regular supply & demand market pressures.
