Talking about two different animals here.
1. Attic fan: very good, solar-powered excellent idea (not sure how well they work). Assuming that you have good eave/soffit vents (or other inlet vents), if the attic fan is sized properly, it shouldn't pull any significant air from your air-conditioned spaces. Your ceiling should be pretty air-tight, just have a good seal around attic access door.
2. Whole-house fan: very good, but.... Do you tend to run the A/C often? Don't think that you'll open the house up at night, run the fan, then close it the next afternoon and run the A/C. Typically, unless you're in a really dry environment (i.e., NOT Georgia), you want to keep the humidity down, so once you run the A/C, you stay on A/C.
