Train allows you to sleep or read or do work as you don't need to watch the road.
Driving to NYC is only half the fun.
After you fight the traffic, you need to find a spot.
Then you need to make sure it is legal and not an alternate side of the block space.
Then you need to worry about people who park by feel/braile, key scratches, bike messenger scrapes, door dings from double parkers, feeding the meters every 1-4 hours, bird poo, dogs urinating on your rims, people sitting on your car as they wait for other people, dust, dirt, theft, parking employees who treat your car like crud, not to mention tolls for the privaledge of being allowed to subject your car to this type of Manhattan abuse.
Leaving at 5-6AM should be easy, Leaving at 6PM will be a test of your endurance, especially on rainy days or very hot days.
I used to have free-ish parking in NYC. I took the train to work and used the free parking for nights and weekends out on the town. I also lived 5 minutes from the train and it was 1/2 the time to take the train than drive, so my view is skewed.
My 0.02. Your mileage may vary.
