"Because your life is riding on your tires."
They got that right. It doesn't really matter which major brand you buy as long as you get a major brand. There are, of course, significant differences in all aspects of performance and longevity across brands and models, but the big companies adhere to a much higher level of quality control than the cheapo brands. They also do a lot more R&D, so there are reasons why their tires just plain work better.
I worked in a gas station one summer while in college and one of the techs there used to mock the tagline of General Tire, "Sooner or later you'll own Generals." He always added, "You just won't own them for very long." At the time Generals were a "economy grade" tire with big aspirations. I learned what he meant when a customer came in with a flat caused by a 1/2" diameter *stick* going through the tread.
There are metrics for speed, wear and temperature ratings, but I have trouble believing some off-the-wall brand from China, sold for half the price or less of visually similar tire from a reputable company is going to save my bacon when I need to stop hard or make an emergency maneuver in less than ideal conditions.
If all you do is drive 40 mph on smooth roads in good weather, then maybe you don't need much in the way of tires. But chances are your needs are a little more demanding.
Like in most things, you really do get what you pay for.
