The only place I know of is in Schroon, little ma&pa bbq along the main drag
(not alot of other choices!). Great park / beach across the street on Schroon Lake, off season it's deserted! Maybe not so now.
My favorite route heading in that direction is Grand Isle Ferry (take I89N to exit 17, west on rt2) to Plattsburg / I87 south - very pretty thru the edge of the High Peaks. Scroon exit at rt74.
Other Ferries are nice, but why park your new car? GI-Plattburg is quick ride, no wait.
Rt 8 is great all the way but closer to VT (east of I87) nice & twisty and sure to be slow! lots of little towns / 25mph).
i've done the rt30/rt8 thru Speculator to Utica - very nice, you'll get to engage the turbo a time or two!
I just advise avoiding rt7 / rt22A south route everybody else uses, no way to start a trip!
That's a prett stout ride for the first day! Enjoy!
Good luck!
