Do the coast thing because it's fun (but too touristy for some folks), but take the roads down to the ocean from Route 1. They mostly dead end at the Atlantic but they are fine roads and fun to drive. Maybe do something really different and get the ferry from Port Clyde out to Monhegan and stay in the B&B out there. Lots of fingers of land that more or less connect. In Brunswick head down to the coast--there's a big sandy beach down there (forget the name) but it's gorgeous.

Rockland and Camden are very nice, with bed and breakfast places and campgrounds.

Head further east to Stonington, Blue Hill and up to Acadia, but it will be crowded there. Further Down East from there on Rte 1 is great and a bit less traveled.

HOWEVER, there's a whole lot more of Maine than the coast. Head inland and to central Maine to Baxter Park and Mt. Katahdin. That gets kinda remote.

Or from Bangor, head west on Rte 2 to Farmington (have lunch or dinner at the Granery), then on Rte 4 to Rangeley. Nice town on a good sized lake, then on to Oquossoc on Mooselookmeguntic Lake. Stay at "Oquossoc's Own Bed and Breakfast." Eat at the 4 Seasons (great chili). Good hiking around Mooselook. Lot of dirt roads for your bikes. Rent kayaks at River's Edge and float some of the Kennebago.

From Oquossoc head on Rte 16 into NH and take 16 along the Androscoggin River. You can stay in NH or head back in to Maine at Berlin.

There are hundreds of options. Get a map and go have fun.

And don't forget to brake for moose. You will probably see some and you gotta stop for them. They are crazy critters.
