Our favorite place to visit! Been going since '74.
First of all, unlike most places where you stay in one place for a week or two, this is best explored in three segments (in my opinion). Take day trips in 60 mile segments North and South - East and West.
Two or Three nights:
Start at Ogonquit and go to Perkins Cove and walk Marginal Way path which extends for 1-2 miles on the Ocean. Up to Wells and right turn towards the Ocean and drive the area. Swim Wells beach, visit downtown Ogonquit, etc. Research area just north of Wells. Great small towns.
Next Three or Four nights:
Head N. on 95 to Boothbay Harbor and stay there. Absolutely fabulous area. Be sure to drive all of the back roads as they lead to varying views of the Ocean. Plenty of shops, etc. Day trip to Popham Beach(S)is a must and you could spend a couple of days sunning. Brides Magazine rated it one of the finest Beaches in the world many years ago - not necessarily for the white sand, but the rock islands. Low tide you can walk on the huge mountains of rock. Lunch/Dinner at Spinney's (end of Peninsula) is a must. Visit Rockland (N), ask about Andrew Wyath museum, Farnsworth museum, visit home of Christina as in Christina's World, etc. Fun shop in that area is the neat shop where all wooden items are made from prisoners, located on Rt 1 I believe. Also, Camden is beautiful and was the actual setting for the Ryan O'Neil soap that was popular in the '60s (forget the name right now).
Next Four or Five Nights:
Head to Bar Harbor. Wonderful! Arcadia park, downtown is really fun.
Don't be afraid of comments regarding tourists. It's not that crowded and you will enjoy. Sorry so quick on this. Study Triple AAA and Internet for more places. I'm not a fan of the outlet shops as in (forgot the name of the town) but you may enjoy.
Note: Labor day weekend begins offseason for bargain rates and fewer people.
