I came upon a motorcycle accident while on a business trip in California. The road went from dead straight to a sharp curve, and the driver probably had too much speed, and the sand washed down the hill onto the curve didn't help. It was a relatively benign bike drop - They laid the bike down and slid. The driver had leathers and seem just fine. He had lent his helmet to his girlfriend on the back - a pretty young thing in shorts and a halter top. They laid the bike down and slid. The girls' underside knee was beginning to swell badly, an needless to say, thin cotton shorts and a halter top didn't help what was going to be a life-altering road rash. This was the pre-cell phone days (Saab came out with its first turbo that year) she didn't seem to have any neck injuries, so we loaded her into my car and drove her to medical attention.
Properly dressed, she would have had a sore knee - now she was looking at reconstructive plastic surgery.
A friend got sideswiped by a car that changed lanes without seeing him. He was in full equipment, despite the heat of the day. His knee was broken by the impact of the car, but the emergency room doctor proclaimed him the best-dressed rider he'd seen in years. Except for the knee, he had a few minor bruises and a badly scuffed jacket.
Life is dangerous, but the right equipment helps. That's why I drive a Saab.
