Just back from 3 weeks in China -- only one Saab sighting (gray 9-5, just outside of Beijing). I admire the owner's loyalty, as I'd guess that parts and service are difficult at best.

Many VWs, Toyotas, Hondas, Hyundais, Kias. Some Audis, Citroens, Peugeots, Buicks, BMWs, and a few MBs and Porsches in the large cities. Many more Chinese cars than my last visit 10 years ago. I rode in a Jin Bei minivan for a few days -- crude, rough riding, noisy. I met a few Chery owners who said that the cars were reliable and well built, much less expensive than a comparable Japanese car.

City driving is chaotic, with all forms of motorized vehicles each competing to be the most deadly to defenseless pedestrians. Elderly people, young mothers with babies in their arms, it doesn't matter -- all are treated much like cones in a slalom course. Often, people trying to cross city streets are caught standing between lanes, with traffic speeding by inches away. Makes NYC seem positively civilized.

So many cars are being added to the mix each day, it's hard to believe that trafic in Beijing could get much worse. It will be interesting to see what accomodations they'll make to transport all the people visiting for the Olympics next year.
