Used to be you got 30-40k out of a pair factory shock absorbers and then the car would bounce-bounce-bounce, but nowadays with lotsa' strut suspensions, shocks don't wear so much, they function pretty well into the 2nd hundred thousand miles and beyond.
There's lotsa' guys who swear by the ride and handling benefits of a particular brand of shocks, but the differences can be pretty subtle IMHO. Old shocks may not function as well as new shocks, but they still function well.
There's lotsa' bushings in the suspension, shock bushings, sway bar bushings, A-arm bushings, and these probably wear out more than the actual shocks or struts. Modern shocks are pretty durable.
