I should have changed the shocks at 50-60K in the 2000 V8 A6 but waited until 100K...wifey went nuts even then at the $600 cost for four Koni struts (1200 or so for coilovers which is another story...shoulda done coilovers). Using the stock springs and swaybars the shocks made an incredible difference...IMHO even better than the OEM ride when the car was new. NO waddle!! Granted the 2000 A6 4.2 was too soft...they fixed it with the sport suspension a few years later.
WRT the saabs...I'd replace the OEM shocks after about 30–40k miles. KYBs have lasted me maybe 10-20k and they fail hard, not mush. Bilsteins too rough on compression right from the start. Konis are my latest favorite on my 87 900T...expensive, but lovely ride with great rebound damping right out of the box.
