New appliances, and notoriously washers & dryers, are such junk that it's hard to pick anything good. The days of the Maytag washer that ran for a quarter-century without repair are over. Ten years ago a new washer was $600. Today a washer is $600. How is this possible? The answer is that appliances are made to a price point, and quality or durability is irrelevant.
The Duet has as good a rep as anything. As far as Sears branded W&D's, Sears used to use Whirlpool exclusively, but now the Kenmore brand could be either manufactured by Whirlpool or Frigidiaire. Avoid the latter at all costs. There are resources on the web that give the codes by which the manufacturer may be identified.
