Internet (lack of) security Posted by Rod [Email] (#3128) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Rod) on Fri, 14 Sep 2007 05:58:00 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I've been reading about internet security recently and the importance of having strong passwords. The recommendation seems to be to use at least 14 characters and a mix of letters, numbers and characters. This apparently makes it very difficult for a "brute force" type of attack to succeed - makes sense to me.
So I go to my online bank account to change the password - and find out the *maximum* number of characters I can use is 6 - letters and numbers, but no symbols. This is for my bank account! I emailed the bank and got a standard reply to the effect of "we are continually reviewing our security procedures and believe they are adequate etc. etc."
I tried my online brokerage account next - I could put in 14 characters at least, but again just numbers and letters, no symbols. I gave up after that.
So are the IT people for these huge institutions asleep at the wheel, or is the importance of having a "strong" password overblown?
Rant over.
