the most important thing is to change the default password.
yes, people do try "password"
use a non-real word. one brute force approach is called the dictionary attack. it basically tries every real word.
take your cat's name and your dog's birthday and intermingle them, like c5h7i0p3. that's very robust
creative is good. something easy to guess is not. (like what your vanity plate says. like 'sailing' or 'bowling' if that's all you talk about)
don't get me started on basic IT cluelessness.
