TF will likely be more energy efficient

Timber framing with SIPS (structural insulated panels) will likely be more energy efficient than log home construction, perhaps significantly so. Cheaper than TF is post and beam, which is similar but uses bolts and metal plates to hold it all together instead of joinery. If you're adventuresome a P&B frame would accommodate strawbale construction as well, which is nearly mainstream these days.
Another option is to find a SIPS building company, which typically will cost you about 5% over stick construction but be cheaper than TF or P&B. Advantages: building will be dried-in (walls, roof, windows, doors) in a week or so, and energy efficiency is superb. You'll lose the big wooden beam look inside.
There's no reason not to do a passive solar design, it doesn't effect aesthetics of the building in any significant way but with enough southern exposure for winter heating can cut 50% off of heating & cooling bills. You need an experienced person to balance glazing and interior mass to get this to work right.
