When to not fix a CRT TV?

I have a 5 year old 32" Sony that needs repair. I assume the repair is $50-200 if I did it myself which isn't so easy when I am not sure what is broken. (In case someone knows, the display sometimes works, sometimes is dim to off. Audio works and on screen menus work.) If a repair person has to make a house call and earn labor I would guess easily another $100+. If only the TV didn't weigh 180lbs, I could avoid the house call.
Is it worth it to fix this when you can buy a new one that is LCD and HDTV capable for say $850? Of course to get the same 32" windowbox size I would have to go up to a 42" widescreen at a higher cost.
How is the lifespan on these LCD TVs? My previous SONYs lasted about 10 years but it seems like most newer items, the longevity has been reduced.
