If the cost of repair approaches 1/2 the cost of a similar new unit, replace it. Comparison shold be made to a non-LCD/HDTV unit with a 32" display. While becoming rare these units are still available in the $350-$500 range.
The symptoms you describe sound like it could be the display tube.....the most expensive component in the set. Cost of the CRT and setup could easily exceed 1/2 the cost of a similar new unit. I would not compare it to the $850 unit you have referenced....it is 42" versus 32", LCD and HDTV.
