...I carry an ever evolving emergency kit. In that kit is fix a flat, tire plug kit, matches, candles, knife, thin thermal blankets, warming patches for the boots and gloves, platic water bottles that are 3/4 full and partially crushed (to allow for expansion when freezing or hot), multi-tool, granola bars, wd40, and a craftsman tool set, and small battery jumper pack w/included air pump, and of course an old cellphone as 911 always works.
If I am on a highway I ruin the tire and rim by driving to get off. Then I just eat the cost of a new tire and rim. It is cheaper than losing my legs or life in a highway crash. If I am on a street or near a highway exit I find a quiet street, put on my flashers, drive to the side, look for the hole, and inflate the tire to look for it. If the tire flat is on the left, I park w/ that side to the curb. Reverse this for a right sided flat. If I can't hear the hole whooshing air I cover the tire w/water and look. Once I find it I plug it. Then I make an appointment within a week or two to get the thing patched properly.
Best,
C
