I was pleasantly surprised at how good they are, and am hoping to get 3-4 winters out of them (late Nov. to mid-April). I like the somewhat less aggressive tread for lower noise and also because the reality of winter driving is that you don't need winter tires most of the time. So more of an "all-season" is really fine here in Southern NH and for my trips to Maine and western NY.
As you note, the WR is the only or one of the only all-season tires rated for "severe winter" conditions. They do it for me, and I have a set on my daughter's care year 'round. Drove those in the snow, too, and at 15-18K miles they are still doing fine.
