I thought about that, too, and B Millar is right. The external SuperDrive (reads and writes CDs and DVDs) is a USB peripheral for $99. Be interesting to see how many people spring for that. When I think about it, with the G4 PowerBook I use as my primary computer for home, business and travel, I rarely use my SuperDrive. About 90% of all files come in wirelessly (mostly email) or on flash drives. It's really only when I need to burn a disc that I use it.
Leaving it out makes the computer smaller and lighter, and it's not an unique approach, as several other small laptops go without an optical drive.
As for the price, it's about the same as other small laptops with similar processing power and good screens. It's wrong to compare it to a $600 laptop from WalMart or BestBuy (that's like comparing a Hyundai Accent to a Saab 9-3SS). The Air competes with the sleek little Sony Vaios and others at the higher end of the laptop game, and is a nicer machine. Also, Apple knows they can charge a premium --and get it-- for the "cool factor" of a product like this. And the "reserve your MacBook Air" is a great move to build initial demand.
If the durability is typical Apple this is gonna be a strong seller, and we'll see some of its capabilities filter down the product line. I'm especially interested in the flash memory "hard drive" option. It's too expensive at the moment--it jacks the price to $3100-- but that will come down fast over the next two years. I think Apple is the first to offer a flash memory drive on a computer.
I know PC Windows users who think my 3-year old PowerBook is nicer than their PCs. This would blow them away.
