Based upon what you’ve shared, I see the following.
The total compensation package is similar to what you're getting now. From that I would take the position that compensation is not the driver.
And yes, pursue a little more money. Ask for 10%-12%; be prepared to settle for 5%. Do not go down the compensation issue road until all other issues are resolved/settled. Open this talking point with.....I'm excited and ready to move on this except for one final point I need your help on…... Be prepared....you have to answer one way or another if there is an acceptable amount of movement.
There are much bigger questions though....for you and your wife personally. As I recall, you're both dependent upon the US/Detroit auto industry. If everything else is equal.....might you not be better off with the new position? If you and your wife have poor/little job security, taking this new position might be the smartest thing you could do.
Another significant issue (which will involve your new employer) is relocation. Before discussing compensation.....explore what assistance your new employer will provide regarding relocation. Money and time, basically. I expanded on this in my last post.
Remember that once you say no it's over; morning-after regrets won't help. Assume that they have a second choice waiting in the wings.
Finally, you have got to be clear in your mind regarding how you feel about your present job; this is the big one. It pushes the decision one way or the other. Job security in a shrinking US industry is really the only mitigating factor...IMHO 2 people have to feel good about what you decide.
