In a transition from engineering to sales in my company I got a car in the deal. I work from home, so I don't put on many miles. The rule of thumb I got was 13k/year to keep the car (get next one). Most of my counterparts do 30-50k per year. I put on 9k. My paycheck deducts $150/month to cover personal use, any differences come out at tax time. I got a Prius, and I get 40mpg and my default speed is 85-ish. All of this sounds OK, right? Well... I have a 1990 SPG that sits (my old daily driver) and a 2000 MC Yellow Viggen Vert that also sits most of the time. I simply don't drive those cars enough. Given the choice when my Prius lease is up after 3 years, I'll probably opt to just expense miles for biz driving. That's an anecdotal case for a low miles driving situation... But I feel that company car isn't the big perk most of my colleagues make it out to be.
Bigger picture, the car isn't a make or break issue for ME. If you do high miles, maybe you'll see it differently. But you have to look at things related to relocation, moving away from friends and/or family, job security, job satisfaction, spouse input, etc. There are many issues, and the car and the similar money are only a small part. If it were a massive raise, that would probably top the scales and all else would be gravy...
Good luck with your decision.
Randy
