If, as you say, the distinction between "real" absinthe and liquorice flavored liquors pretending to be absinthe is the presence of wormwood, then Lucid is the real deal. It was created by a New Orleanian, Ted Breaux, and has received its COLA certificate from the Feds.
'Lucid' is the real deal. Please read the following taken from "Current", 'Return of the Green Fairy', 1/03/'07:
It's Lucid and it's legal
Last March, Lucid, a new absinthe imported from France and labeled as an "absinthe superieure" to set it apart from other absinthes, became the first of five brands to receive a Certificate of Label Approval (COLA)
from the Treasury Department's Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB). Jared Gurfein, founder of Viridian Spirits, the company behind Lucid, employed absinthe expert Ted Breaux to create a modern version for legal sale in the U.S. as good as any vintage or quality absinthe sold in
Europe. Gurfein emphasized that they did not change anything about the chemical composition. "Lucid is a 100 percent genuine absinthe that would be worthy of the finest absinthes prior to the ban," said
Gurfein, explaining that Viridian's respectful collaboration on conceptual issues with the TTB and their persistent determination is how Lucid broke the barrier.
Now, Breaux, who lived in New Orleans until he lost his home in Hurricane Katrina, produces Lucid in France's renowned Combier Distillery for sale in the U.S. He contends that several studies have debunked absinthe's reputation for causing hallucinations. "Notions about thujone are mythical," said Breaux, whose extensive research has made him a guest on the Food Network and the History Channel. "I would die several times over of alcohol poisoning before I would feel any effects of thujone."
Distiller of 124-proof Lucid, Breaux continued to say that their product contains the same alcohol by volume (and the same amounts of thujone, according to Breaux) as the vintage absinthes he owns. "It's always a lovely experience for me," Breaux said of the drink. "There's nothing else quite like it."
Enjoy the real deal... Lucid.
