Don't forget downshifting as well and using the engine's compression braking. Also, if you double clutch and rev match, you can downshift to first easily. Sometimes I don't ever touch the brake.
Basically, the best way in snow is smooth consistant changes and reading the road. It's the guys that jab the brakes, fail to look ahead and crank the wheel that wreck. Nice smooth transitions won't upset the car. Look ahead and anticipate what is coming up. Example: A truck in the next lane can throw a lot of slush into your ruts, and you should be ready for it. Rolling wheels grip better than sliding ones and you can only turn as well as your tires can grip. Higher speeds may also result in tires floating over the muck instead of cutting through it to the road below. Another technique is left foot braking to help balance the car during turns if you feel the need to hit it a bit faster than a reasonably sane person.
I also agree that for slush, thin tires are better since they'll cut into it better. Basically, thinner tires are better for cars in all types of snow since you don't want to float over it. The only exception is deep snow, but I doubt you'll have your Saab out in those conditions.
